REFLEXOLOGY FOR THE HANDS AND FEET
Reflexology has been defined as "A natural healing art, based on the principle that there are
reflexes in the feet and hands which correspond to every part of the body.” Reflexology is a
science that maps out the reflexes on the feet and hands to all the organs and the rest of the
body. By applying acupressure and massage like reflexology techniques to the feet and hands,
all other body parts are positively affected. The feet and hands are more sensitive than most
people realize. The hands and feet detect pressure similar to how we use our eyes to detect light.
Kevin Kunz, one of the pioneers of reflexology, said, "Imagine stepping on a tack. Your whole body
reacts because of something perceived by the foot. Reflexology with a full range of pressure sensors,
utilizes the same body system of fight or flight to relax the body."
Reflexology was rediscovered by Dr. William Fitzgerald in 1913, who ran a New England hospital
using reflexology instead of pain pills, muscle relaxants or sleeping pills. Foot and hand
reflexology can and has conquered many health problems naturally such as stress issues and PMS,
while also acting as a type of preventative maintenance.
The 1996 China Reflexology Symposium Report has found foot reflexology to be 93.63% effective in
treating 63 disorders. Reflexology techniques applied to the hands and feet can help with relaxing
the muscles, increasing circulation, reducing sinus congestion, pain relief, increasing energy and
an overall feeling of wellness. Reflexology on the hands and feet can be self-applied. It can be done
practically anytime and anywhere. Reflexology on the hands and feet uses massage techniques, while
working on similar principles to acupuncture using the thumb and fingers to find sore spots on your
feet and hands.
